One of the Doughnut’s greatest strengths is its scalability. It can be applied at the global level or tailored to the unique context of a state, region, county, or city.
CalDEC is working with cities and counties across California to assess where they currently sit within the Doughnut and to identify priority areas for action.
Explore the case studies below to see how regional Doughnuts are being developed in practice. If you’re interested in creating a Doughnut for your own region, we recommend starting with DEAL’s guidance on selecting indicators and using the Doughnut visualization tool. If you’d like hands-on support or strategic guidance, please contact CalDEC at caldec@caldec.org.
San Francisco: Our San Francisco doughnut initiative began with a group of residents meeting in person monthly at the Trellis Co-Working space. We are currently working on a Doughnut Portrait of San Francisco, a Doughnut Business Accelerator program, and continuing to meet in person to connect and let the doughnut rise in SF.
San Jose: Our San Jose doughnut initiative is led by a group of community members interested in climate action and civic engagement. We meet regularly online and are working to create a doughnut portrait of San Jose that is participatory and in collaboration with many local community groups.
